When your roses arrive, cut the stems immediately while holding them under cool running water — this prevents air bubbles from blocking water uptake.

Place roses in deep water (at least ⅔ of the stem) for the first 4–6 hours after arrival. This gives them the best start and helps them open beautifully.

The outer 2–3 petals on a rose bud are "guard petals" — they're slightly tighter and protect the bloom. Gently remove them to reveal the full beauty inside.

Roses respond especially well to cooler temperatures at night. Moving them to a cooler spot overnight can add 3–4 extra days to their vase life.

Rose stems seal over quickly. Recut ½ inch at a 45° angle every two days and they'll continue drinking well throughout their vase life.

Wash your vase with a drop of bleach and warm water before use. Bacteria in an unwashed vase is the single biggest killer of roses.

In mixed arrangements, some flowers drink faster than others. Check the water level daily — lilies and sunflowers are especially thirsty and can drain a vase overnight.

Remove any flowers that fade or wilt immediately. Decaying flowers release ethylene gas and bacteria that shorten the life of the healthy ones around them.

Eucalyptus, ruscus, and ferns are very hardy. Once your delicate flowers fade, the greens can live on beautifully in a simple arrangement on their own.

When cleaning your vase, rinse it thoroughly — soap residue left in the vase can clog stem cells and cause flowers to wilt faster than they should.

As the arrangement ages and some stems are removed, don't be afraid to consolidate remaining blooms into a smaller vase. A smaller, fresh arrangement beats a sparse one.

For orchids, hydrangeas, and lilies — a light mist of water on the petals (not the stem area) once a day keeps them hydrated and looking fresh longer.

Unlike most cut flowers, tropical blooms like bird of paradise, anthuriums, and heliconias hate the cold. They're from warm climates and will blacken in temperatures below 55°F.

Tropical flowers thrive near a bright window (but not in direct harsh sunlight). A few hours of filtered sun each day keeps them vibrant and open for much longer.

Always use room-temperature water for tropical arrangements — cold water shocks the stems. Let tap water sit for 30 minutes before adding to the vase.

For arrangements with large tropical leaves (monstera, palm fronds), gently wipe them with a damp cloth weekly. Dust blocks the pores and reduces their lifespan.

Cut orchid stems (not potted) need clean water every 2–3 days. Avoid submerging the petals in water — just the stem. They can last 2–3 weeks with proper care.

Tropical flowers come from humid environments. Placing a small dish of water near your arrangement or using a humidifier nearby can extend their life noticeably.
